Alright.
We all know that language is a major barrier in marketing. It affects designing, writing, and placing campaigns.
If you don't know the region's or your target audience's language, you'll be left behind.
But it is not only about common languages like English, French, etc.
This has expanded to phrases, slang, and jargon, too.
I bet you have a story where your parents looked at you weirdly when you first said “cool” to them.
I have plenty of those. :)
That being said,
Newer generations have A LOT of new lingo. It's now a staple of their in-person and online communication.
IF you want to be a proficient marketer that can sell to the new generation of consumers, you've got to know the meaning of some words.
Without further ado,
Let’s break down some of the most common phrases of today, so you know how to use them in your copy, videos, ads, etc.
#1 - Cringe
Cringe.
Cringe is a word that means embarrassment and/or disgust.
Cringe is when you see something online that makes you feel embarrassed, disgusted, or awkward on behalf of that person/thing.
This one is a staple of online communication today, so you better master this one quickly.
#2 - Rizz
I am laughing so hard while writing this. xd
Rizz is jargon for charisma.
It means that a person, male or female, has great charisma. He or she can easily attract or persuade others to do what he or she wants.
It is commonly associated with the dating space.
Example: When a male approaches females and manages to get a date with them easily, it means he has "rizz."
#3 - W
“W’s in the chat, booyyys."
W is a short form for Win. It’s that simple.
It is usually used in context when someone does something good or cool, and then it is labeled as a W (aka a win) for that particular individual.
You will also see it in shape: “Common {individual name} W."
Common The Unfiltrd Writer W.
This one states that it is common for that person/thing to do cool things or good stuff, aka stack wins/stack Ws.
#4 - L
An opposite of the W.
L is short for Lose/Lost.
When someone/something does something stupid, bad, ugly, etc., he has lost. Aka, he has taken an L.
Like W, it has another form: Common {individual name} L. It means that person/thing is commonly doing bad stuff, aka racking Ls.
#5 - Yap or Yapping
“Stop yapping, lil' bro."
Yap or yapping stands for someone who talks too much. It’s a jargon word.
You will usually see it under videos/posts where someone is rambling, monologuing, or stating unpopular opinions.
Maybe I yap too much for some of you here. (I hope it’s not true 🥹)
#6 - Aura
“-1000000 aura points”
Aura is a word used to describe how big your level of cool or respect is.
It’s like a modern term for swag.
Basically, the more cool/good shit you do, the more Aura you have or the more Aura points you get.
If you do the opposite, you lose aura/aura points.
By writing this weekly newsletter, I gain infinite aura. Checkmate.
#7 - Based
Based.
"Based" describes someone with a strong opinion on a topic. They don't care if they're right or if anyone cares about their opinions.
You will most likely encounter “based” under topics such as politics, fitness, money, etc.
#8 - Cooking
“Let him cook now."
Cooking is a term used to describe when someone is making something special or good, or is creating something that is expected to be of high quality.
This is because when we see someone cooking, we expect it to be a Michelin-level meal.
The same thing goes for everything else. Someone is writing an ad that is supposed to make millions of $? Let him cook now.
#9 - …before GTA 6
“We got The Unfiltrd Writer weekly issue before GTA 6 💀”
So this one was born out of a meme.
Many of you know that Grand Theft Auto, aka GTA, is one of the most popular video game series of all time.
Yet, the last GTA, GTA V, was released way back in 2013. For context, I was fucking 12 back then, now I am 23.
Since GTA VI still hasn't been released (we're still waiting for Rockstar). So, people use this joke anytime something comes out before GTA VI.
You will see this everywhere.
Conclusion.
Ooof, this was a long list.
There are a lot more words out there, but these will point you in the right direction when it comes to marketing to new generations.
If you want some extra ones, we can make a 2nd issue of this.
DISCLAIMER:
Do not overuse and overdo these words in your marketing efforts.
Otherwise, you will become…
Cringe.
The advertisement of the week
Alright, now on to the ad.
This week’s reward for the ad that captured my undivided attention goes toooo…
Calm!
A brilliant advertisement.
It aired during the presidential election about a week ago. It was the perfect way to advertise their product.
The ad was literally a 30-second slot on TV that was on full mute and said:
“We bought this ad space to give you 30 seconds of silence. Yep, just silence.”
Well played, Calm, well played.
And guess what they're selling?
An app that lets you reduce your stress, anxiety, and stay calm.
Brilliant.
That being said,
Keep calm and use Calm.
The Real Conclusion
Aaaand cut! 🎬
Alright folks, this is it for this week’s issue.
Once again, I apologize for not sending it on time, but I hope that the value was worth the wait.
As always, please let me know if I can make this even better, if it is good right now, or if it sucks.
Also, shoot your questions so we can add a Q&A section for next week's issue.
Until next week’s shenanigans,
Yours truly,
The Unfiltrd Writer
