So, here is what happened today.
Sam Altman just announced he bought "chat.com" for about $20 million.
GOD DAYUM!
That’s a lot of macaroons.
But, wait, how do we know it's $20M?
Well, the internet is a good place, and people are even goodier at connecting the dots.
It turns out that HubSpot's CEO acquired this domain a while back for an outrageous sum of money, and about 2 months ago, sold it for an even bigger amount of money, a.k.a. $20 million.
To none other than Sam Altman.
So what has this got to do with branding?
It has a lot to do with it.
First of all, if you go ahead and click on chat.com it will take you to chatgpt.com.
This gives us a signal that something is brewing in the OpenAI lab.
But here is the real kicker.
As you know, new generations have overtaken the world with new lingo and jargon.
And I will bet my house that at least one time in your life you have either heard a kid or read online a saying that goes:
"Chat, is this real?”
Now for me, the first time I heard this was when I was watching a short clip of a well-known streamer by now who goes by the name "IShowSpeed."
Speed, in short, uses this phrase when he needs to confirm the authenticity of something that he has just seen or experienced on his stream with his audience, aka the chat.
Since then, the phrase has gone viral and is a common way to ask people if something they saw is true, real, or authentic.
Now this is just one dot.
Here is the second one:
By now, you probably know that OpenAI has made a voice mode for ChatGPT. Hell, it has even reached the point of an advanced version.
Basically, you can now talk to your ChatGPT and have a custom voice for it, like Jarvis from Iron Man.
So you figured it out by now where I am, or better yet, where Sam and OpenAI are going with this. 🙂
I think that the whole idea is to rebrand ChatGPT to "Chat" and make it a household name.
Imagine seeing young people a year from now, or sooner, pull up their phones and ask ChatGPT or Chat to confirm something by saying:
"Chat, is this real?”
AND HE ANSWERS!!
I don’t know about y'all, but this is sending shivers down my spine as I am writing this.
We live in crazy times.
This is going to be such a good rebrand that I will let one social media comment I stumbled upon describe it to you. 😂
So, are there any possible negatives about this?
I don't think there are. But, one other comment on social media said it might affect it because "Chat" is a common word.
Usually, people use it for grouping DM applications.
So things like, "Yo, send that to my chat," can create a small friction.
But if you ask me, I use: “Send it via DMs," “Send it to my DM," when communicating that sort of thing.
I guess we need to wait and see how this develops further.
Conclusion
There is an important lesson to be learned here today.
And that is that marketing today has become blazingly fast.
You can no longer waste opportunities for grabbing attention by wasting hours and hours on plans, analyses, and other things.
Do not get me wrong, plans are needed. But if you think too much about, in this case, branding, you might miss the greatest opportunities right in front of your nose.
In Snoop Dogg's words for what Sam Altman has possibly done today:
“This motherfucker don’t miss. This motherfucker don’t miss man”
Alright y'all, this one has been fun.
See y’all tomorrow, peace out ✌️

P.S. If you know anyone else who has $20M to spare, I hear that there is a pretty good new ghostwriter in town who has started his own newsletter, The Unfilt- something something. Anyway, let them know :)
